Busy Weekend in OKC

It was a big weekend for country music and rodeo fans. The IFR was in town, as were George Strait and Reba McEntire.

Sadly, I missed all of it. I heard both were packed full of entertainment. Did you go to either?

By the way…I think George might be sporting one of his own shirts…looks pretty close to this one (Wrangler Men’s George Strait Long Sleeve Plaid Button Down Navy/Gold) don’t you think?

2010 OKC Run with the Bulls Postponed

In an attempt to revitalize and re-spark the event and it’s participants, Stockyards City Main Street has decided to postpone the Oklahoma City Run with the Bulls 5K race until Spring 2011.

So it looks like I have more than enough time to train and get ready. Are you planning on running this Spring? Maybe we can get a Langston’s group together?!?! Post a comment and let me know if you are interested!

Reckless Kelly Running Wild in OKC!

rk1 rk2

On May 9th, I found myself at the Wormy Dog again for the rescheduled Reckless Kelly show. As far as I knew it was just Reckless Kelly playing, but around 10 there was a band on stage and it was their good buddies Highspeed Hayride, a foursome from around the Texas/Mexico border. Highspeed Hayride have had their share of hits on the Texas Music Charts and I’m hoping they will come back around very soon because they put on a good show.

As usual, the headlining band didn’t come on exactly when expected but delivered none the less. They opened with the crowd favorite “Ragged As The Road”, which was a hit for them off their latest album “Bulletproof”.  There hasn’t been an album these guys have put out that hasn’t had at least four or five big hits for them. Nominated as one of the best live act in Texas by the 2009 Lone Star Music Awards, Reckless Kelly showed they know what they’re doing. Don’t forget they’ve got a background that can be dated back to performing on the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson when they were 11 and 12 years old…  not once, but twice.

Known as the wild ones in the music scene no matter where they are, they do everything in full force and everyone got exactly that Saturday night. There was still a line waiting to get in at 12:30a.m. Reckless Kelly kept the crowed going with all their hits: “Sixgun”, “Motel Cowboy Show”, and “Break My Heart Tonight” just to name a few. I don’t think there is a “country music” instrument that Cody Braun can’t play. Braun was nominated for best musician at the 2009 LSM Awards where he pulled out a mandolin, harmonica, banjo, and even stole the mic from his brother Willy to sing “Wild West Windblown Band”. Ending the night with the hand down crowd favorite, “Crazy Eddies Last Hurrah”, they had the entire elbow-to-elbow crowded room screaming the lyrics and going insane making it one of the most enthusiastic crowds I have seen.

If you missed out on this wild west windblown band then you will get two more chances in the next two months with Cross Canadian Ragweed’s 3rd Annual Music & Mayhem at Eufaula, and Country Fever in Pryor. I’m not going to ride off into the sunset this time but take a deep breathe and leave with my favorite Reckless Kelly lyrics…

“Well it sure didn’t take too long
I woke up one mornin’, she was gone
And the note that she wrote didn’t say “Dear John”
It said, “Goodbye, ******, I’m gone!”

She was a home-grown mountain girl
Raised in a different world.
I was a wanna-be rocker,
She was more into Merle.

And I couldn’t see it just wouldn’t work
And now I’m double fisting longnecks
And grapefruit and Stoli
But I’m never gettin’ over Jolie”

Aaron Watson Running Up The Stairs To The Top

After failing to scrounge up some Texas Mardi Gras tickets, I decided to head to my favorite saloon…The Wormy Dog to check out Aaron Watson.  I have been meaning to catch one of his full length show’s. Last time I saw Watson, he opened for Big & Rich, so called “next big act” Lo Cash Cowboys (what a joke) and halfway through the show all the Aaron Watson fans had cleared out. I’m not sure if that’s because they loved Aaron Watson and he had already played or if they didn’t like bad music. Probably both.

Aaron Watson is one of those guys that oozing with Texas music talent. His music is honky-tonk through and through and with his eighth album Angels and Outlaws under his own independent label, Big Label Records, I knew his set would be solid. With honky-tonk songs like “Love Makin’ Song”, “3rd Gear and 17″ and crowd favorite “Reckless” Aaron Watson kept the ground in it from start to finish.

If you have a chance to see Aaron Watson go do it! There is no absence of steel guitars and fiddling in this show, just the way country music should be. I’m glad I brought my dancing boots for this one. Whether it was one of his infamous honky-tonk, steel guitar driven songs that make you want to just dance and twirl the night away or a slow dance with “Off The Record” or his top 10 song on the Texas Music Charts: Top 50 Songs of 2008 album “Hearts Are Breaking Across Texas”, Aaron Watson knows how to put on a show. Not only did he take requests from fans, but like every good country singer/song writer he has a song about his granddad “Barbed Wire Halo“, my personal favorite.

Well, I need to run to store and pick up some more Coke for my whiskey since, here in this small town, everything shuts down at 11p.m.  So, I’m signing off to ride into the sunset once again till next time.

NO JUSTICE AT THE WORMY DOG

I’m excited about this review because I’m a HUGE No Justice fan. These guys deserve a lot more praise than I could ever give them.

The night at the Wormy Dog started off right with Turnpike Troubadours, a band out of Tahlequah, Oklahoma who look to be headed in the right direction. After a great set by TT, No Justice took the stage. No Justice know how to put on a show. With a stunning light show and fog machine it felt like a rock show. Usually a lot of smoke and lights are to just make up for bad music but that’s not the case with No Justice.

Recently joining forces with Smith Music Group these guys have come a long way from Stillwater, Oklahoma. With energy, they opened the show and closed the show the same way.  No Justice did not disappoint their fans (The No Justice Junkies) by playing crowd favorites “Red Dress”, “Horseshoe Lake”, “Never Come Back” and ending the night with my personal favorite “The Toast”. No Justice left the packed house cheering for more. Bottom line is these guys can put on show and have the music to back it, so sorry if you missed out on one of the best shows I’ve seen this year.

Now it’s late and I’m tired and heading off into the sunset with my whiskey in hand, cause if I was a six-gun I would be breaking my parole…that’s a joke folks! Until next time, never trust a man with shiny boots.

American Way: City Game, Cowboy Style

Oklahoma City recently joined the NBA family with the relocation and rebranding of the Seattle Superonics. Now known as The Thunder, the team plays its 41 home games in the heart of our home town.

In light of this event, American Way magazine has showcased the city in two separate articles across its last two issues. The first article, in its February 1st issue, includes “what to do and see” recommendations from several local personalities including civic leaders, business owners, and media. From French bistros to dive bars and “cowboy museums” to crew style rowing, the list of recommendations provides a great cross section of the varied cultural and lifestyle attractions available in the city.

Which brings us to Linda Cavanaugh, a long time resident and Oklahoma City media personality who serves as an anchor on KFOR-TV’s news channel 4 . When it comes to western wear, Linda proclaims “Langston’s is it.” Specifically, she is directing readers to our Stockyards City store, which is just a short drive or trolley ride from downtown where the Thunder plays their home games at the Ford Center. Located in a historically renovated building, the store serves as both a retail store and tourist attraction. With many western themed businesses in the Stockyards, run by skilled craftsman with a passion for western culture and lifestyle, Stockyards City is actually a great place for all things western.

For a more in depth look at the NBA in Oklahoma City, the latest issue of American Way magazine contrasts the NBA’s newest venue with one of its most revered, New York’s Madison Square Garden, home of the New York Knicks. Titled City Game, Cowboy Style, the piece is an enlightening and in depth look at two very different markets that are now linked by one great game. It certainly has convinced me to make sure I catch a game at the Garden soon, if for nothing else, for the hot dog on the way in. (Speaking of, anyone think we can get those guys at Coney Island on Main Street to open a stand outside the Ford Center?…)

Music Shot Through The Heart On Valentine’s Day

Well, another weekend spending all my hard earned money has came to an end. This time it is with great pleasure I get to write a review for The Bart Crow Band. If you don’t own either of their albums, then go buy one right now.

This special event was a holiday that Rooster doesn’t celebrate: St. Valentine’s Day. I’m sure of that(lol). What can I say that I haven’t said before about the Bart Crow Band? They are worth every penny no matter where they are playing. Webster’s Dictionary defines love as the object of attachment, devotion, or admiration for the Bart Crow Band. The love is their music. Love, no pun intended, on Valentines day is what you get when you attend a Bart Crow Band show. Devotion and admiration from the band, to the fans taking requests, and jammin out with a crowd favorite Tom Petty cover too.

To end the night, Bart rattled four maracas, in what can best be described as jiving’ to the mellow acoustic set. Bart does make you feel his passion for music. He writes to those Texas sounds that made him famous. The show was a riot from start to finish. The crowd went wild for everyone’s favorite “Wear My Ring” and, of course, I was jammin’ to my favorites “Drifting In The Wind”, “Hollywood”, and “Walk on By”.

It was a great show as I was pleased. I can still remember the first time I heard The Bart Crow Band, just like my first taste of Jack Daniels.

With that, my friends, I’m headin’ off into the sunset until next time.

Our official pilot shoot is coming up on the 28th of this month with No Justice at The Wormy Dog, so I hope to see everyone there. Let’s sell the place out!
